What is FTL transport?

FTL transport stands for Full Truck Load Transport. Literally, this means the transport of fully loaded trucks. This implies that a truck is fully loaded with goods from a single company or exporter. You therefore utilize the full loading capacity of the truck.

Generally, these are relatively more cost-effective shipments because they are easier to schedule than a half-full truck, especially regarding road transport! The trailer does not need to visit various loading addresses to pick up individual pallets. This makes FTL logistically more efficient when it comes to road transport.

Difference between FTL and LTL transport

While FTL transport stands for Full Truck Load Transport, LTL means Less than Truck Load Transport. In a sense, FTL means a full truck and LTL means a truck that is not fully loaded. In most cases, an LTL shipment will be supplemented with cargo or pallets from another company so that the truck still operates with a full trailer. The driver then makes one or more extra stops along the way. In the transport industry, we call this groupage.

FTL transport offers several advantages over LTL transport. In the case of LTL transport, the trailer will more often end up at staging areas because these are logistically more challenging shipments. This often makes FTL transport more economical for the shipper, as it is logistically simpler.
